Subject
Description
A letter from Alice to her father, Salloum Mokarzel, written after Alice and her family's arrival in Greater Syria (modern-day Lebanon). In this letter, dated August 10, 1925, Alice describes her mixed emotions about living in Lebanon and even wishes she was back on the S.S. Sinaia. She reflects on previous experiences from the sea voyage, including a trip to Constantinople and a visit to the Hagia Sophia mosque. Nevertheless, her adjustments to life in Lebanon introduced her to family members she has taken a liking to, namely Salloum's cousin, Joseph Mokarzel. Alice and her sisters will enroll in school soon and they must decide between either a French school system or an American school system. Her mother wants them to go to an American school system, as they speak English
however, Alice seems conflicted, as she has a desire to learn French but is not fond of the school's uniform dress-code.
