Description

The Albert J. Ellis (1913-1969) Collection contains items pertaining primarily to the passing of State Senator Albert Joseph Ellis. Ellis was born to Joseph and Mary Ellis in New Bern, North Carolina on June 6, 1913. He graduated from New Bern High School in 1931 and attended the University of North Carolina at Chapel first for a B.S. in Commerce and then a law degree in 1938. The next year Ellis moved to Jacksonville, North Carolina where he worked as an attorney and later became senior partner at the law firm Ellis, Hooper, Warlick, and Waters.

Ellis was an Army veteren of World War II and he served as the president of the Jacksonville USO since it’s beginning in 1942. He also served as president of the Jacksonville Kiwanis Club, Jacksonville Chamber of Commerce, the Onslow Historical Society and as chairman of the Onslow County Airport Commission. Ellis was a member of the Knights of Columbus, Elks, Moose, the American Legion and the 40 and 8.

Ellis was married to Marie Hargett Ellis with whom he had four daughters and one son.
