Vol. 1 No. 9 of الفنون, Al-Funun, was published in December 1913. This issue continues the serialization of Ameen Rihani’s novella Zanbaqat al-Ghawr [The Lily of the Valley]. Other work originally written in Arabic includes a piece of criticism by Mikhail Naimy; poetry by Kahlil Gibran, Tanyus Abdu, and Ni`mah al-Hajj; an essay about language by Hanna Abdallah Nasser; and short stories by Salim Yusuf al-Khazin and Jamil Madur. This issue contains few translations: the most well-known writer included in this issue is Leonid Andreyev, the father of Russian Expressionism. The issue also contains a reproduction of Leonardo da Vinci's Mona Lisa.
