Al-Funun vol. 1 no. 02
Title
Al-Funun vol. 1 no. 02
Description
Vol. 1 No. 2 of الفنون, Al-Funun, was published in May 1913. Like the first issue, this volume is comprised largely of translations, including works by British author Rudyard Kipling and German philosopher Friedrich Nietzsche. This issue is notable for its inclusion of works associated with the Symbolist movement, including Russian poets Mikhail Kuzmin (the first openly gay Russian writer) and Konstantin Balmont and the Polish writer Stanisław Przybyszewski. The issue contains two reproductions of paintings, both of human figures in allegorical scenes. Many of the translators were unknown, but at least one piece was translated by Nasib Arida. The editors also propose several contests, presumably to encourage original submissions.
