A name given to the resource
Baddour Family Papers
Description
An account of the resource

Biographical/Historical Note

The Baddour family of Goldsboro, North Carolina descends from Shickrey Baddour, who immigrated to the United States from Hammana, Lebanon in 1893, and Victoria Alkazin, his second wife, a Lebanese immigrant who grew up primarily in Atlantic City, New Jersey. Shickrey and Victoria had six children together: Evelyn, Philip, Isabelle, Mary, Mitchell, and Lorraine. Shickrey aslo had two children from his previous marriage, twins Seef Charles and Joseph.

Shickrey and Victoria moved from Atlantic City to Goldsboro in 1915. Shickrey worked as a peddler until 1926, when he co-founded the Mt. Olive Pickle Company. Both Victoria and Shickrey were active members of North Carolina’s Lebanese-American community. They belonged to the Hammana Club of North Carolina and Shickrey served as president of the Syrian-American Association of North Carolina. He died in an automobile accident in 1938. The family had close ties with the family of Rose Alkazin Reyes, Victoria's sister, who moved from Atlantic City with her husband George and their children around 1917, and the Farfour family, neighbors whose daughter Lousie married Philip Augustine Baddour, Sr.

Philip Augustine Baddour, Sr. owned a clothing shop on John Street in Goldsboro, and served as a City Councilman and Mayor Pro Tem of the city. His son, Philip Augustine Baddour, Jr., served in the North Carolina House of Representatives between 1993 and 2002. Philip's other son, Dick Baddour, directed the athletics department of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill for fourteen years.

Scope/Content Note

This collection contains studio portraits and family photographs of members of the Baddour and Farfour families. It also contains early twentieth century newspaper clippings in Arabic as well as letters and documents relating to the memorialization of Shickrey Baddour.

The Romey Lynchings: A Story of Lebanese Immigrants Collection
Description
An account of the resource

Biographical/Historical note

In the early morning hours of Friday, May 17th, 1929, a Lebanese immigrant was lynched in Lake City, Florida. He was shot multiple times and left to die along a lonely stretch of the road heading south out of Lake City to Fort White.

N'oula Romey (نقولا رومي) was the fourth victim of racial terror that year in Florida, and one of ten people who were lynched by white mobs across the US in 1929 alone. Just hours before, his wife Hasna (Fannie) Rahme was fatally shot by Lake City police in their store. Their tragic murders were the most gruesome and violent attacks on Lebanese immigrants in the US, but this was not an isolated incident. Their killing was a part, and the culmination, of a widespread pattern of racially-motivated hostility, vitriol and physical abuse directed at early Arab immigrants who came to, worked, and lived in America between the 1890s and the 1930s.

Scope/Contents note

The Romey Lynchings: A Story of Lebanese Immigrants collection includes primary sources used in The Romey Lynchings project.

Materials date from 1905-1932 and include newspaper articles and correspondence that contain accounts of anti-immigrant discrimination that predate the Romey lynchings, contextual material from the time period, racial violence, corruption in the law, and personal stories surrounding the tragic deaths of Nola and Hasna.

Researchers should be advised that materials in this collection contain harmful content, including racist and white supremacist language, graphic descriptions of lynching, and other forms of violence.
