A series of letters reguarding the arson attempts on a business in Fort White, Florida in Columbia County. Mrs. W.J. Howell writes the governor asking him to investigate the matter as the County Sheriff Douglass has failed to adequately investigate. Carlton contacts Douglass who claims he has looked into the matter. However, Mrs. Howell indicates that she believes Douglass is deliberately avoiding his duties as he continously claims more evidence needs to be provided for a warrant.

The investigation was comissioned by Al-Hoda newspaper and published there on Monday June 10, 1929. Rizk traveled from his home in Jacksonville, Florida to Lake City in order to interview witnesses about the events of May 16 and 17, 1929. An article in The Lake City Reporter, published in Lake City Florida on May 17, 1929 "Exclude Immigrants For Five Year Period". This article was published in Lake City on the day Nola Romey was lynched and Fannie Romey was killed by police officers. Their deaths were not reporter in the Lake City paper until the following issue, one week later, while other papers in the country reported on their deaths that day.
