<h4>Biographical/Historical note</h4>
<p>Joseph Stewart (1900-1967) and Emeline Romey (1916-2012) married in the late 1940s. As a child, Emeline Romey and her three siblings were taken in by the Moses family and relocated to Birmingham, Alabama after the murders of their parents Fannie and Nola Romey by the Lake City, Florida police and the KKK, respectively, in 1929. Romey spent her life in Birmingham and Mobile, Alabama and volunteered for the American Heart Association, the National American Red Cross, and the Birmingham Veterans hospital. She died in 2012, 45 years after the death of her husband.</p>
<h4>Scope/Content note</h4>
<p>The Joseph Stewart Letters collection consists of letters sent from Joseph Stewart in Birmingham, Alabama to Emeline Romey in Mobile, Alabama prior to their marriage. The letters include discussion of Stewart’s daily life, travels, mutual friends, and certain details of the off-and-on relationship between Stewart and Romey. The letters cover the period from 1943 to 1945, with one additional letter from 1958, in which Stewart reflects the gratitude he feels for Romey.</p>

<h4>Biographical/Historical note</h4>
<p>Joseph Stewart (1900-1967) and Emeline Romey (1916-2012) married in the late 1940s. As a child, Emeline Romey and her three siblings were taken in by the Moses family and relocated to Birmingham, Alabama after the murders of their parents Fannie and Nola Romey by the Lake City, Florida police and the KKK, respectively, in 1929. Romey spent her life in Birmingham and Mobile, Alabama and volunteered for the American Heart Association, the National American Red Cross, and the Birmingham Veterans hospital. She died in 2012, 45 years after the death of her husband.</p>
<h4>Scope/Content note</h4>
<p>The Joseph Stewart Letters collection consists of letters sent from Joseph Stewart in Birmingham, Alabama to Emeline Romey in Mobile, Alabama prior to their marriage. The letters include discussion of Stewart’s daily life, travels, mutual friends, and certain details of the off-and-on relationship between Stewart and Romey. The letters cover the period from 1943 to 1945, with one additional letter from 1958, in which Stewart reflects the gratitude he feels for Romey.</p>

<h4>Biographical/Historical note</h4>
<p>Joseph Stewart (1900-1967) and Emeline Romey (1916-2012) married in the late 1940s. As a child, Emeline Romey and her three siblings were taken in by the Moses family and relocated to Birmingham, Alabama after the murders of their parents Fannie and Nola Romey by the Lake City, Florida police and the KKK, respectively, in 1929. Romey spent her life in Birmingham and Mobile, Alabama and volunteered for the American Heart Association, the National American Red Cross, and the Birmingham Veterans hospital. She died in 2012, 45 years after the death of her husband.</p>
<h4>Scope/Content note</h4>
<p>The Joseph Stewart Letters collection consists of letters sent from Joseph Stewart in Birmingham, Alabama to Emeline Romey in Mobile, Alabama prior to their marriage. The letters include discussion of Stewart’s daily life, travels, mutual friends, and certain details of the off-and-on relationship between Stewart and Romey. The letters cover the period from 1943 to 1945, with one additional letter from 1958, in which Stewart reflects the gratitude he feels for Romey.</p>

<h4>Biographical/Historical note</h4>
<p>Joseph Stewart (1900-1967) and Emeline Romey (1916-2012) married in the late 1940s. As a child, Emeline Romey and her three siblings were taken in by the Moses family and relocated to Birmingham, Alabama after the murders of their parents Fannie and Nola Romey by the Lake City, Florida police and the KKK, respectively, in 1929. Romey spent her life in Birmingham and Mobile, Alabama and volunteered for the American Heart Association, the National American Red Cross, and the Birmingham Veterans hospital. She died in 2012, 45 years after the death of her husband.</p>

<p>Joseph Stewart (1900-1967) and Emeline Romey (1916-2012) married in the late 1940s. As a child, Emeline Romey and her three siblings were taken in by the Moses family and relocated to Birmingham, Alabama after the murders of their parents Fannie and Nola Romey by the Lake City, Florida police and the KKK, respectively, in 1929. Romey spent her life in Birmingham and Mobile, Alabama and volunteered for the American Heart Association, the National American Red Cross, and the Birmingham Veterans hospital. She died in 2012, 45 years after the death of her husband.</p>
