Mike Easley appointed Joseph E. ZaytoUD of Cary to the North Carolina Symphony Society Incorporated Board of Trustees. Zaytoun has been the chairman of Zaytoun and Associates, Inc. Insurance since 1985. He previously served as the company's president since it was founded in 1957. Zaytoun is a member of the Tryon Palace Commission and a director of the Tryon Palace Council of Friends. He has previously served as a board member of the Cary Chamber of Commerce, the Cary Cultural Arts Commission and the Wake County Historic Preservation Commission. Zaytoun was presented the Small Business of the Year Award in 1992 by the Cary Chamber of Commerce, and he received the Medal of Honor of the City of LeTouquet, France in 2000. He is a lifetime member of the Sixth Marine Division Association, Veterans of Foreign Wars, the Marine Corps League, and the American Legion. received his AB. degree in Economics from the University of North Carolina at Chapel mIl. On November 21, 1999, Pope John Paul n honored Zaytoun when he received the Pro Ecclesia et Pontifice Award, which is presented to one who has distinguished himself in the service of the Catholic Church. One of Zaytoun' s youth achievements was his earning the Eagle Scout badge' of the Boy Scouts of America.. In 1961, Gov. Terry Sanford appointed him to a four- year term to the N.C. State Board of Elections. He Zaytoun was one of the founders of Raleigh' s Capital National Bank in 1973, and was its Chairman when in 1978 it merged with three other financial institutions to form United Carolina Bankshares. In 1998, UCB merged with Branch Banking & Trust Company (BB&T), thus becoming one of the largest banks in the Carolinas. He was named to the local BB&T board of advisors in Cary until his retirement. In 1967, Zaytoun and four other Raleigh individuals formed the Wake County Estate Planning Council, whose members now include some 125Iawy.ers, bankers, insurance CLU's, and CPA's. He is a life member of the insurance industry's Million Dollar Round Table, an International Organization. The North Carolina Symphony Society Incorporated Board of Trustees serves as the governing body for the North Carolina Symphony Society, which is comprised of the symphony orchestra and its various programs, the artistic and administrative staff and the 17 symphony chapters throughout the state. The board detennines the mission's organization and purpose, selects and reviews the president/chief executive officer and director, and secures financial support for the organization.
