A Reflection on My Father
May 11,2005
My father, Edward W. Najam, was a great and good man. He was
honest, honorable, and dignified.
He was kind, thoughtful, caring and
considerate. And he was, at once, both gentle and strong.
He was an extraordinary husband and a devoted father. He deeply loved
my mother and me. He was completely unselfish. He was a good provider.
Every important decision he made was based entirely on what would be best
for his family.
By the Grace of God, my father lived a long and useful life. God
empowered him with a strong determination to live, with my mother's
unrelenting tender loving care, and the constant attention of his magnificent
physicians, who also loved him. There are no words that can adequately
describe the grief that Mother and I feel in losing him. This short and
incomplete reflection on his life is the most difficult speaking assignment I
have ever undertaken. But I cannot let this moment to honor his memory pass.
I ask that you please bear with me.
Edward W. Najam had a keen and powerful intellect which seldom
rested. He relished the life of the mind. He was not only well educated and
literate in his academic field but also across a broad spectrum of knowledge.
He was always inquisitive, always engaged in a search for more infonnation
and understanding.
My father taught me to read and write in both English and French. I am
indebted to him for my language skills, but my skill level will never approach
his mastery ofword~, phrases, and the subtle nuances of meaning which can
distinguish one word from another. My father was concerned not only with the
meaning of a word but also with its etymology, with its origin and
development, with tracing the word back as far as possible. It was a family
joke that he would often leave the dinner table to consult one of his many
dictionaries. And he sent me on an endless quest to find the right word - "Ie
mot juste" and taught me the importance of choosing just the right word to
convey the proper meaning in each instance.
My father was a superb teacher. He inspired me by his words, by his vast
knowledge, and by his example, just as he inspired generation after generation
of students who had great affection for him.
2
He genuinely cared about
· educating young men and women, not only in the classroom, but in preparing
them for life. He was generous with his time and gave wise and caring advice
to many graduate and undergraduate students.
My father's inspiration for me has been largely spiritual and intangible.
But there is also tangible evidence of his example. When my father was a
graduate student, my grandmother Parker gave him a simple oak desk, which
she had in storage, for his study. On that desk he wrote his Ph.D. dissertation
on Cardinal Richelieu, using a Smith Corona typewriter. When I bought my
first home, he gave me the desk. Today that desk sits in my study and supports
a computer which I use every day in my work.
But he was not only a teacher and scholar. He was also practical man.
He taught me how to hold a hammer and drive a nail, saw wood, build a
fireplace fire, shave, tie a tie, wire a lamp, paint inside and outside, and plant
flowers and shrubs. He was fastidious in every task he undertook. Whatever
the project at hand, he gave close attention to every detail, whether he
was
hanging a picture, writing a letter, or cooking a meal. I often joked with him
that he, rather than Rene Descartes, should have written the Discourse on
Method, because he had a method for conducting every task, large and small.
3
He was an excellent cook and would often work .side-by-side with my
mother in the kitchen. He would always prepare our Thanksgiving turkey,
including the dressing. As he would move through the kitchen .-:. usually
preparing the entree - he would leave pots and pans in his wake for Mother to
clean up. I joked with him that his motto should be, "Why use only one pot
when two or three will do."
He loved to shop for groceries, especially fresh fruits and vegetables. He
knew a lot about fresh produce because for many years he maintained his own
vegetable garden. He would cultivate the soil with his own recipe of compost
and other ingredients and would always produce a bountiful harvest of fresh
tomatoes, squash, green beans, and com. And every year he would enjoy the
fragrance and bounty from his herb garden. My father also knew every cut of
meat and would make a well-reasoned meat selection only after thoroughly
discussing his options with the butcher.
Our trips and residence abroad - especially in Paris - were his special gift
to Mother and me, as well as to those friends and relatives who occasionally
traveled with us. He gave us all a personal tour, not only through historic
places, but also through European history and culture. He spoke in detail of the
4

kings of France and their contemporaries as if they had been his personal
acquaintances. His teaching both at home and during our travels abroad made
an indelible mark on my understanding of Western civilization.
One small anecdote is in order. Once when we were returning to our
apartment in the 16th Arrondisement, my father apparently ran a red light. He
was whistled to a stop by a French policeman who berated him at some length
for his grjevous error. French Professor Najam listened intently and then
informed the policeman that he did not understand, whereupon the officer
shrugged his shoulders in exasperation and told my father in English to "Watch
the red light" and sent us on our way without a ticket.
My father loved his home, inside and out. He improved every home he
and mother shared - from 1506 First Avenue in Durham to 2640 Windermere
Woods Drive in Bloomington, and the four homes they owned in between.
And he loved his yard, including every blade of grass, every flower, every
shrub, and every tree. It seemed to me that he just knew the names of "~il
plants. He taught me how to care for my yard. Today, when I walk through
my yard, I have a visit with my father. As he guided me in life, he also guided
me in the landscaping of my homes. For potted plants, he prescribed a
5
'.
proportionate and carefully measured mixture of top soil, peat moss, and
composted cow manure, which we call, "Ed's blend."
In 1969 Paul McCartney wrote and the Beatles sang on their AbBey Road
album that, "In the end, the love you take is equal to the love you make." By
that standard, my father enjoyed the love, affection, and respect of so many
people, in all walks ofHfe, because he gave so much of himself to others. If
one shouldjudge a man's life by the positive influence he had on those around
him, my father earned an A+.
The morning my father died I wrote my colleagues the following: "My
father was my mentor, teacher, and friend, a wise and intelligent man whom I
greatly admired. He was a great father. I loved him." All of this is true.
My father and my mother were equal partners in my upbringing. It was
Mother who gave me his name. She made me a son who bears the same name
as his father. My father was my first and always my most influential teacher.
His intellectual influence upon my work, his exceptional command of the
written word, his skill as an editor, and his name - Najam - will live on, in
perpetuity, in every judicial opinion I have authored and published.
May the peace of the Lord be with him. May God rest his soul.

An account of the resource

Biographical/Historical Note

Dorothy Findlen descends from Samuel [Samir] “Sam” Abdo Parker (1890-1954) and Helen Kelly Parker (1891-1985). Helen immigrated to the United States from Syria in 1901 and Sam in 1905. They married in 1912 and had five children: Alma, Louis, Agnes, Lillian, and Magdalen.

Sam and Helen first worked in the produce industry in Rocky Mount, North Carolina, before moving to ELizabethtown, North Carolina in 1931. In Elizabethtown, the couple opened a department store. Sam and Helen also helped establish the first Catholic Church in Bladen County. For a decade, Sam and Helen hosted Mass, led by Father Henry Vosh of Newton Grove, within their own home. Land for a church was anonymously donated in 1931, and fundraising for its construction lasted for an additional decade. Helen Parker organized a fundraiser to purchase stained-glass windows for the church. The church, called Our Lady of the Snows, was dedicated on November 30, 1941.

Alma Parker attended Sacred Heart College (now part of Belmont Abbey College) in Belmont, North Carolina, where she studied business. Alma was a charter member of the Gray Moss Chapter of the American Business Women’s Association in Elizabethtown. Magdalen Parker attended the College of Notre Dame in Baltimore, Maryland, and became a teacher. Louis Francis Parker helped establish Bladen Community College and served on its Board of Trustees. The college offers three scholarships in the names of Parker family members: the Alma Parker Farris Scholarship for Business, which Alma established to encourage young women to study business; the Louis & Louise Parker Scholarship; and the Sam & Helen Kelly Parker Scholarship, established by Agnes Parker Najam to honor her parents’ love of education.

Alma Parker took over proprietorship of the family department store. She married Shikralla Doumit Farris (1910-1964) in December 1941. Shikralla graduated from the American University of Beirut who immigrated to the United States in 1937. His parents immigrated to Lawrence, Massachusetts. Alma and Shikralla ran the department store together and renamed it the Farris Department Store. Under their ownership, the store shifted away from dry goods to focus on clothing sales. When Shikralla passed away in 1964, Alma continued to run the store until her retirement in January 2007. She died in 2019. Alma and Shikralla had three daughters, Kathryn, Anne, and Dorothy.

Scope/Content Note

This collection contains official documents, newspaper articles, and photographs related to two generations of the Parker and Farris families. Included are naturalization documents, birth and death certificates, obituaries, family photographs, and articles detailing the accomplishments of family members. The collection reminiscences of Alma written by her grandchildren, which are available only upon request.
