PRE.AMBLE
The undersigned have associated themselves for the purpose of maintaining the public worship of Almighty God,
according to the faith and discipline of the Holy Eastern
Orthodox Church, represented in this country by the Antiochian Orthodox Archdiocese of Toledo, Ohio and Dependencies in North America.
ARTICLE I
SECTION I - The Corporation is known as St. George's
Antiochian Orthodox Catholic Church of Charleston, West
Virginia, both ecclesiastically and in Civil Law.

Constitution and by-laws
SECTION II - The purpose of this organization is to
preserve the Spiritual and physical well-being of the Antiochian Orthodox Congregation in Charleston, West Virginia,
and particularly that portion thereof which worships at the
St. George's Orthodox Eastern Church of Charleston, West
Virginia. It shall ordain, and establish rules and regulations
according to which the church, members thereof and committees elected by, and representing the same, shall act
and officiate respecting the relations between the Clergy,

��SECTION 5 - Nominations of members to the Board
shall be submitted by a nominating committee of not less
than three members of the congregation selected by the
President. Nominations may also be made from the floor
during the election meeting.
SECTION 6 - The nominees to the board shall be voted
upon by secret ballot at the annual election meeting of the
voting membership of the Parish to be held on the third
Sunday in January of each year.
SECTION 7 - Each voting member shall have the privilege to vote for the officers and members of the Board of
Directors.
SECTION 8 - Election of Officers - The nomination
and election of the four officers shall be made from the
eligible members of the Board. An eligible member is one
who has served on the Board a minimum of one year within
the last years. Candidates receiving a majority of the votes
cast shall be considered elected to the office for which he
was nominated.
SECTION 9 -The newly elected Board of Directors shall
assume their duties on the first duly constituted meeting in
February.
SECTION 10 - Nominees, nominated from the floor, for
membership to the Board of Directors, must be present at
the election. Nominees submitted by the Nominating Committee, need not be present at the election. Nominees for
officers of the Board of Directors must be present at the
election.
ARTICLE V
DUTIES AND RIGHTS OF THE BOARD OF DIRECTORS
to issue such a call, the same may be issued by the Pastor
Immediately upon election of the officers and members of
the Board the result of such election shall be mailed in
duplicate to the Archbishop for his approval.
SECTION 2 - The proceedings of the Board shall be
based on the will of the majority.
SECTION 3 - The Board shall require all societies or
clubs connected or affiliated with the Church to file with
it a copy of their Constitution and By-Laws which to be
operative must receive the approval of the Pastor and the
Archbishop of Toledo, Ohio and dependencies.
SECTION 4 - The Board shall have the right to the use
of any funds in the Treasury of any organization of the
Church.
SECTION 5 - The Board shall require that no Association or Society or any individual affiliated in any way with
the Church should undertake to have any entertainments
or should solicit anything from anyone at any time which
has for its purpose the rasing of money in the name of or
for the Church, without first obtaining the consent of the
Board of Directors.
SECTION 6 - The Board shall call upon the Pastor of
the Church for consultation at any meeting where his presence is deemed necessary for discussion of matters for the
benefit of the Church and Parish.
SECTION 7 - Every member shall attend meetings at
the time designated. If absent three times in succession
without a legitimate excuse as determined by the Board, his
place on the Board becomes vacant, and the Board shall
then take action under SECTION 8 - Rights and Duties
of the Board to fill the vacancy.
SECTION 1 - It shall be the duty of the retiring president to issue a call for the meeting of the newly elected
Board. In the event of the failure of the retiring president
SECTION 8 - In case of a vacancy in the membership of
the Board, the Board shall elect by a majority vote from the

����SECTION 11 - The Board of Trustees shall meet at
least four times a year each meeting set by the President
and advertised in the Church Bulletin.
ARTICLE IX
BOARD OF TRUSTEES
BY-LAWS
SECTION 1 - The Board of Trustees shall be composed
of twelve persons to be elected from the voting membership
of the Parish. The term shall be for 5 years. Vacancies on
the Board must be filled at the regular annual election meeting of the congregation or at any congregational meeting
especially called for that purpose.
PLEDGES AND ASSEMENTS
ARTICLE I
SECTION 1 - For a member to be considered a voting
member of this Church, they must make an annual financial pledge to the Church.
SECTION 2 - A candidate must have been a voting
member of the Parish for the five pears prior to his nomination to the Board.
SECTION 2 - For persons 18 years of age or over to be
considered voting members in the Parish, they must make
a financial pledge of at least fifty-two dollars ($52.00)
n ually. This is to be paid as specified by the pledge
ys em.
SECTION 3 - Notices of the meeting for election shall
be given by mail to each voting member at least one week
prior to the date of the election meeting.
SECTION 4 - Nominations of members to the Board
shall be made by a nominating committee and also from the
floor during an election meeting.
ECTION 3 - Members who have not paid their current
pledges in full for each year will be allowed a one month
grace eriod before being consid_ered inactive and thereby
lose all privileges and services of the Church and Priest.
SECTION 5 - The nominees to the Board shall be voted
upon by secret ballot.
SECTION 4 - a. Non-members shall not be entitled to
the services of the Priest or to the use of the Church without special assesment: Wedding or Funeral $300.00 and for
Baptism $100.00 payable in advance.
SECTION 6 - The 12 nominees receiving the greatest
number of votes shall be considered elected to the Board of
Trustees.
SECTION 7 - The Board of Trustees will transfer Church
property after the approval of 2/3 of the voting members
at a Congregational meeting.
b. General members as defined in 'Article III Section
6 shall be permitted the services of the Priest and
the use of the Church with the following assessments:
Wedding or Funeral $150.00 and for Baptism $50.00.
SECTION 8 - The Board of Trustees shall administer
Church affairs in the absence of the Board of Directors.
SECTION 9 - Members of the Board must be financially
acceptable by a reputable banking institution.

<p>The Antiochian Orthodox Christian Archdiocese of North America (AOCA), headquartered in Englewood, New Jersey, oversees seven dioceses with over 250 parishes in the United States and Canada. </p>
<p>The AOCA is one of 24 archdioceses of the Greek Orthodox Patriarchate of Antioch and All the East across the world. The editorial office for their publication <em>The Word</em> is in Brooklyn, New York. AOCA founded the periodical as an Arabic language publication in 1905, which ran for 16 volumes. The final issue of the Arabic <em>Al-Kalemat</em> appeared in 1933, and the English iteration <em>The Word</em> began anew in 1957.</p>
<p>The original copies of the periodical are housed at the Antiochian Heritage Library in Bolivar, Pennsylvania. The Antiochian Heritage Library was founded in 1987, and its collections focus on information about early Christianity, the theology of the Orthodox Church, and religious and cultural themes in Middle Eastern history. </p>
<h4>Scope/content note</h4>
<p>The Antiochian Orthodox Christian Archdiocese of North America Newspaper Collection includes both Arabic-language volumes of Al-Kalemat and English-language volumes of <em>The Word</em> (also called Al-Kalemat, Al Kalimat, Al Kalimah, and الكلمة), covering the years 1905-1993. The periodical focuses on current events and debates from an Antiochian Orthodox perspective. </p>
<p>The periodical is written and published by The Antiochian Orthodox Christian Archdiocese of North America and continues to be published monthly excluding July and August. Some years and issues are not included in the collection, and there are some years that the publication did not run.<br /><br />The collection also includes various parish commemorative booklets from Antiochian Orthodox churches in different regions of the United States, including but not limited to, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, West Virginia, and New York.</p>
<p>The English-language volumes are located here on the KCLDS Archive's website. The Arabic-language volumes are located on the Khayrallah Center’s <a href="https://arabicsearch.org/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Arabic Newspapers database</a>.</p>

by the President.
A report of the finances of the organization shall be
made at the first meeting in each year and whenever requested by tho President
or a majority of the member·s present at any meeting.
No check in excess of

such has been ~uthorized 'by a majority of the members at a regular meeting.

<h4>Biographical/Historical note</h4>
<p>The Research and Study Collection of Ephemera contains materials related to Frank Lackteen, Marrie Bayrooty, the <em>Morning Tribune</em> of Detroit, Michigan, the Lebanese government’s 1955 “Summer of Emigrants” program, and other topics in Lebanese emigration.</p>
<p>Frank Lackteen, born in Lebanon in 1897, acted in a variety of American silent and Western films. As a child, he immigrated to the United States and worked at a textile mill in Lawrence, Massachusetts, before becoming an actor. Marrie Bayrooty was a circus performer who worked with the Bayrooty Brothers Oriental Troupe in the Barnum and Bailey Circus sideshow. In 1905, she spun on her heels and toes for 32 minutes straight, breaking the record for human twirling. In 1955, the Lebanese government launched a tourism initiative titled the “Summer of Emigrants,” which encouraged members of the Lebanese diaspora to visit their homeland.</p>
<h4>Scope/Content note</h4>
<p>The Research and Study Collection of Ephemera includes talent cards of Marrie Bayrooty and related circus performers, photographs of Frank Lackteen, newspaper clippings in Arabic from the Detroit <em>Morning Tribune</em> and <em>The Arab-American Message</em>, postcards, a flyer for a Muslim youth camp in California, commemorative stamps from Lebanon, and an envelope and letter addressed to Nadim Attallah.</p>

<p>The Abdallah family were Lebanese immigrants who lived in North and South Carolina. The family operated businesses across North Carolina, including in Selma and Smithfield. These businesses included Abdalla's Market, a small grocery, the Selma Style Shop, and a merchandise store.</p>
<h4>Scope/Content Note</h4>
<p>The Abdalla Family Papers include photographs of the Abdalla family in North and South Carolina from the early twentieth century as well as an address given by Tom Abdalla to employees at his store in Smithfield, NC. The collection includes portraits of Abdalla family members.</p>
