El-Khouri Family
Description
An account of the resource
These materials were provided by Marsha El-Khouri Shiver and primarily relate to the life of her father, Joseph Maroun El-Khouri, and his family in Lebanon and in the United States.

Biography

Joseph Maroun El-Khouri was born in 1924 in Kour, Batroun, Lebanon and Mariam Thomee Yazbek El-Khouri, one of seven children. His father, Reverend Joseph Michael Maroun El-Khouri was a Maronite priest, and at least one sibling, Sister Victorine El-Khouri, followed his example and joined religious orders.

Joseph served as an intelligence agent and interpreter for Great Britain during World War II. In 1949, Joseph travelled to Minneapolis, Minnesota to help settle an uncle’s estate. Initially Joseph had no intention of immigrating permanently to the United States, but soon after he arrived he met and fell in love with Rose Isaac while visiting relatives who lived in the large Lebanese community located in Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania. Rose was the daughter of Thanios (Thomas) Isaac and Moura (Nora) Lawandos Isaac, who immigrated to the United States in 1912 and 1914, respectively, and were married in 1917. Thanios Isaac supported his wife and five children by working various laboring jobs, including for the railroad and a local wiremill. Thanios Isaac passed away in 1939.

Joseph and Rose married in Rose’s hometown in 1950, and moved to Minneapolis where they operated a grocery store until 1953. Joseph was naturalized in 1954 with the help of his friend Vice President Hubert Humphrey, at the time a Minnesota senator. In 1955, Joseph and Rose moved to Andrews, North Carolina, to be closer to Rose’s sister Bessie Isaac Jabaley, who was living near her husband’s family in Copper Hill, TN. The Jabaley’s helped the growing El-Khouri family establish themselves in their new home by making Joseph the manager of their department store, Jabaley’s, which Joseph purchased and renamed to Khouri’s in 1965. The store remained open until 1989.

Joseph quickly established himself as a prominent civic leader in North Carolina. He served on a number of boards and service organizations including: the Andrews Lion Club, Western Carolina University Board of Visitors, Cherokee County United Way, the Andrews Chamber of Commerce, and the Daniel Boone Council of Boy Scouts. Joseph was a devoted Democrat, even serving, with his eldest son George, as an elected delegate to the 1988 Democratic National Convention in Atlanta. In addition to these civic and political accomplishments, Joseph and Rose were pillars of the Catholic community in North Carolina, holding the town’s first Catholic masses in their own home, and donating the land upon which the Holy Redeemer Catholic Church was built in Andrews, North Carolina.

Joseph and Rose had seven children: George Maron El-Khouri, Theresa El-Khouri Martin, Mariam El-Khouri Gerber, Marsha El-Khouri Shiver, Barbara El-Khouri, Catherine El-Khouri, and Anthony El-Khouri. Joseph passed away on July 22, 2012; at the time of collection acquisition (2012), Rose El-Khouri was still living. Since his passing, Joseph El-Khouri’s contributions to North Carolina have been recognized locally, and his legacy has been carried forth by his children and grandchildren.

Scope and Content

Joseph and Rose Isaac EI-Khouri
By Rose EI-Khouri
Edited
oe EI-Khouri, the sixth of
seven children of Rev. Maroun
and Mariam EI-Khouri was
born in Kour, Batroun, the Republic
of Lebanon on May 28, 1924. His
father was a carpenter and builder
and later became a priest. His mother passed away when he was 3 1/2
years old.
Rose Isaac EI-Khouri is the
fifth child of six children born to
Nora and Thomas Isaac. She was
born in Wilkes-Barre Pennsylvania.
Her parents were
from
Kour
Batroun, Lebanon
and are both
deceased.
In 1949, Joe
was asked to go to
America as an
attorney-in-fact for
the estate of an
uncle who lived in
Minneapolis ,
Minnesota, to represent the family
members who were
still in Lebanon. He arrived in New
York in October of that year on a
Sunday. Since offices are closed on
weekends, Joe had to stay one night
on Ellis Island and on Monday his
papers were processed.
When Joe arrived in the US, he
had no plans to stay in this country.
His plans were to return to Lebanon
upon completion of his business,
but that was not the case. He did not
realize that settling an estate would
take years and not months . He
decided to return to Wilkes-Barre
whenever he could and court Rose
to whom he was attracted. They
corresponded by mail and phone
and were married on June 28,1950,
in Wilkes-Barre.
Joe became good friends with
Hubert H. Humphrey, who was
Senator of Minnesota at that
time. With the help of Senator
Humphrey, Joe was able to accomplish something his deceased uncle
had tried to do for years - bring his
family from Lebanon to the US.
Two of the sons, 11 and 15 years
old, arrived two days before Joe's
wedding and stayed in the care of
Joe and Rose until their mother and
younger brother arrived a year and
half later.
The two boys helped in the grocery business Joe and Rose established and were being trained so
that when they were old enough and
ready they would take it over as
J
was their father's wish. The grocery
business was turned over to the two
boys in the summer of 1955.
During the five years in the grocery business, Joe and Rose had
three children: George, Theresa and
Mariam. Also during that time, Joe
attended night classes to study for
his American citizenship . He
received his naturalization papers
on November 11, 1954 in St. Paul,
Minnesota.
While Joe was looking for a
business of his
own, he received
a call from the
J abaley ' s
of
Copperhill ,
Tennessee , and
they set him up
in business as a
partner. Rose ' s
mother,
two
brothers and a
sister lived with
them. One brother and her sister
married two of
the Jabaley children.
Joe and Rose moved to
Andrews in September 1955 and
with the Jabaley's bought the
Whitaker Brothers Clothing Store
in October. Over the next six years,
Rose gave birth to Marsha, Barbara,
Anthony and Catherine. Marsha
was born in the Rodda-Van Gorder
Clinic which was located over the
Nichols Dept. Store. The rest of the
children were born at District
Memorial Hospital.
Joe remained a Jabaley partner
until 1965, when he bought them
out and changed the name to
Khouri 's Family Department Store.
All of the children later helped in
the business.
Joe and Rose EI-Khouri are
founding members of the Holy
Redeemer Catholic Church in
Andrews, where their daughter,
Theresa, became the church organist at age thirteen and remained so
for twenty years . .
The EI-Khouri children attended Andrews Elementary and graduated from Andrews High. All were
honor students and members of the
Beta Club. Joe became involved
with many church, civic, community affairs, and his democratic party,
and has made a name for himself.
George is a graduate of UNC
Chapel Hill and works for the
Department of Justice and the State
Bureau of Investigation in charge of
12 counties. He is married to
Barbara Guffy of Marble and they
have two children, Maron and Nora.
Theresa is a graduate of UNC
Asheville and is a teacher' s assistant at Courtney Elementary in
Yadkinville, NC in the Resource
room for learning disabled. She is
married to Phil Martin of Jonesville
and they have two children ,
Nicholas and Corey.
Mariam attended UNC Chapel
Hill and married Dan Gerber of
Chapel Hill. They both have
worked for Africare in Mali and
Chad and are now in Benin, Africa.
They have three children, Nicole ,
Eric, and Chad.
Marsha is a graduate of UNC
Chapel Hill and has worked at the
Marble Learning Center, Chapel
Hill Memorial Hospital Burn
Center and with the handicapped.
She is married to Claude Shiver of

Joseph EI-Khouri, a handsome young man of 25 from Kour, Batroun Lebanon, arrived at Ellis
Island on a cool October Sunday, 1949. He came on family business with no intentions to stay in this
foreign land. little did he know God's plan, and a chance meeting that would chart the course for his
life. On his way to help settle an estate for an uncle who had passed, Joe was taken by a cousin from
NY. to Wilkes-Barre, PA to rest and meet with friends and relatives. In a room full of people, he
noticed a pretty girl, standing in the corner, too shy to speak. He asked who she was- Rose Mary

With less than a handful of

first Mass was held in their home. And after celebrating Mass wherever they could for the next 7
years, in 1962, Glenmary built and dedicated Holy Redeemer Church, right next door to Joe and

the second pew on the right was full at every Mass.
Now after 60 years of marriage, this bond- destined by God and strengthened by faith and

they have touched. God bless Joe and Rose for many years to come.

Wael and Lama Abou-Chakra Papers
Description
An account of the resource

Biographical/Historical Note

Wael Abou-Chakra, the third of four children, was born in Beirut, Lebanon in December 1968. His family fled Beirut and moved to Ammatour, Shouf, Lebanon in 1975, when Wael’s father’s employment by the Lebanese military made the family a target of violence during the Lebanese Civil War. Wael studied mechanical engineering at the Arabic University of Beirut and mathematics at the Lebanese University before joining his older brother, who had left Lebanon to attend college, in Charlotte, North Carolina, to continue his education. He moved to the United States in 1986 and obtained a BA in Translation from UNC-Charlotte. While working post-graduation at IBM, Wael began studying computer science at a nearby community college and pursued certification in networking, hardware, and security. He received an MBA in Technology Management. Wael was awarded IBM’s Inventor of the Year Award in 2008, and began a career as a Senior Release Manager and a Master Inventor for IBM in the Raleigh-Durham area.

Wael is also involved with the Lebanese-American community. He is a member of the American Druze Society and served as president of the Triangle Lebanese Association. Wael traveled to Romania in 2008 as part of IBM’s Corporate Service Corps to help nonprofit and private sector agencies integrate into the European Union. In 2011, he was chosen to be a leader for IBM’s Celebration of Service program and he has earned the President Volunteer Service Award Certificate multiple times.

Wael is married to Lama Abou-Chakra, a fellow Lebanese-American who grew up in Haldi, a suburb of Beirut, and Ammatour. Lama's parents were both natives of Ammatour and descended from a different branch of the Abou-Chakra family. Lama was born in 1976 and moved to the United States in 1995. She graduated from high school in 1993 and met Wael the following year. Lama studied at North Carolina State University and University of Massachusetts, attending part-time while working at IBM. Wael and Lama have two children, Katia and Nassim.

Scope/Content Note
