Title
A name given to the resource
Kahdy and Wehbie Family Papers
Description
An account of the resource

Biographical/Historical Note

Mike Mettrey (Mikail Mitri) Wehbie was born in Mt. Lebanon on August 8, 1888. His wife, Mary Nehra Wehbie of the Saliba family, was born in Mt. Lebanon on January 25, 1896. Mike Wehbie's family immigrated to the United States in the late 1800s; Mary immigrated in 1906. In the early 1920s, Mike, Mary, and their nine children moved to Bteghrine, Lebanon for three years, where the children attended a French school. Mike and Mary's children were Nell (Nellie) Mettrey Wehbie, William Mettrey, Helen Wehbie, Christmas Wehbie, Amelia Wehbie (Salem), Simon or Sam Wehbie, Margaret Wehbie (Saloom), Marie Wehbie (Mossberg), and Wehbie Mettrey Wehbie. After returning to the United States, the family moved from Elizabeth City, North Carolina to Raleigh, North Carolina. In Raleigh, Mike opened several businesses on Fayetteville Street, including the Log Cabin, which was a popular restaurant and tavern during World War II.

Nell (Nellie) Mettrey Wehbie was born in Elizabeth City, North Carolina on April 30, 1916 to Mike and Mary Wehbie. She graduated From Meredith College in 1938 with a teaching degree and concentrations in English and Foreign Languages. George Kahdy was born in Baskinta, Lebanon on October 6, 1921. George and his parents, Adma Sawaya and Asaf (Assif) George Kahdy, immigrated to the United States when he was 18 months old. George had four sisters: Afifi (Adele), Genee (Janette), Sally, and Virginia. George was raised in Macon, Georgia and attended the Lanier School for Boys where he participated in ROTC. He spent one year at Georgia Tech before volunteering as a buck private in the 30th Infantry Division of the United States Army in 1940. George worked at Fort Jackson, South Carolina training draftees, became a fighter pilot in the Army Air Corps, and taught graduate pilots gunnery and fighter tactics at Eglin Air Force Base in Florida.

In 1944, George met Nell Wehbie through his parents, who were friends of Mike and Mary. At the time, Nell was working as a high school teacher in Warsaw, North Carolina. She also worked for the Red Cross in Washington D.C., where she lived with her sister, Amelia, and Amelia's husband, Joe Salem. On July 9, 1944, Nell and George married at Christ Episcopal Church in Raleigh. While George was stationed at Eglin, the couple lived in Milton, Florida. They had their first child, Barbara, on July 14, 1945. On January 16, 1948, they had twins George and Georgette.

The family moved to Knightsdale, North Carolina, where Nell acquired a teaching job and George attended Wake Forest University under the G.I. Bill. After graduating, George taught math and science at Needham Broughton High School, where Nell taught language courses. Nell was honored in the 1950s and 1960s by the American Foreign Language Association as one of the top high school teachers in the United States. While teaching, both Nell and George earned Master's degrees at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. In 1956, Nell received a Fulbright Scholarship to study at the Goethe Institute in Munich, Germany for the summer. Through the American Institute of Foreign Studies, she led students and teachers on trips to England, France, Switzerland, Austria, Germany, and Spain for 25 summers. George served as principal of various schools for 13 years, including during the period of school integration. He went on to hold various governmental positions related to education.

Nell passed away in July 2015 and George in September 2023. Barbara Kahdy Estes started a physical therapy practice in Atlanta before moving to the North Carolina mountains. George Kahdy Jr. became a veterinarian and founded a veterinary practice near Raleigh. Georgette Kahdy Stone taught French and Spanish and lives in Charleston, South Carolina.

Scope/Content Note

The Kahdy and Wehbie Family Papers primarily relate to the lives of George Kahdy, Nellie Mettrey Wehbie Kahdy, and their three children, Barbara, George, and Georgette. The collection contains photographs, newspaper clippings, correspondence, and other records related to the family and their achievements. The collection also includes images from a trip to Lebanon around 2010.

When the Southern Federation of Syrian-Lebanese American Clubs was organized, its purpose was to devote itself to maintaining traditional fellowship, to
encourage local and regional educational, civic and charitable projects, and to
contribute to charitable causes without regard to race or creed.
The Southern Federation Foundation, Inc. is the charitable arm of the Southern
Federation. It is a non-profit organization chartered under the laws of the State of
Texas. The Foundation is a Section 501(C)(3) approved Internal Revenue Service entity, thereby allowing all contributions to the Foundation to be fully tax
deductible.
The Foundations purpose is to use its income and principal for literary and
charitable purposes which includes the Kahlil Gibran Scholarship program and
such other projects which may come into being.
Monies contributed to the Foundation are earmarked for distribution to three
main sources: the Scholarship Fund, the Charity Fund or the Cultural Fund.
These three sources are detailed elsewhere in this brochure. A list of the contributors to each is herein provided.
Acknowledgement for contributions made to any fund within the Foundation
will appear in the annual Foundation booklet. Donations by individuals or organizations may be made to an existing fund, to establish a specific fund (either annual
or endowment), or for special designated projects.
Contributions to annual funds will be available for use in the fiscal year in which
they are made. Permanent or Endowment Funds willuse only the interest accrued
for the stated purpose. Such can be accumulated to produce a permanent fund for
a specific purpose, or to achieve a desired level of total contributions in an existing
permanent fund or endowment.
The following classifications have been established and apply to all funds within

Scholarship Contributors
The Scholarship Program
Since the inception of the Scholarship Program in 1949, over 400 scholarships,
totaling in excess of $320,000.00 have been given in the interest of higher
education. In the beginning, $1. 00 from each Southern Federation convention
registration was directed for the Scholarship Fund and the Scholarship Committee
worked to raise the additional funds needed. These monies have been donated by
the Southern Federation's affiliated clubs, individual members and the Federation
itself. In addition, scholarships are solicited from and given by non Federation
members interested in education and in our ethnic organization.
Scholarships are made available to worthy students seeking higher education.
Applications are reviewed, approved and awarded at the sole discretion of the
Scholarship Director and Scholarship Committee. Past recipients have returned
to serve the organization in various capacities including that of President. They
have serviced society in the fields of law, medicine and business.

In 1983, the Scholarship Committee began hosting a reception at the Federation's Annual Convention for all students applying for scholarships and for the
donors who make these scholarships possible.
The growth of the Scholarship Program indicates a need for steady, substantial
sources of scholarship money. A strong feeling of commitment is planted with
each scholarship awarded. Contributions help students acquire the knowledge
and financial assistance they need to make meaningful contributions to society.
There are three primary ways to contribute to the Scholarship Fund and to
remember a loved one or commemorate a special occasion.
A "One Time Scholarship" requires a minimum $250. 00 donation. The donation bears the name of whomever the donor wishes and is presented in the year
received. It is awarded under the guidelines of either the Scholarship Fund or the
Gift for Knowledge Fund whichever is specified by the donor.
A "Perpetual Scholarship" is one where the contribution is invested in an
interest bearing account. This individual endowment account remains intact and
only the accrued interest is used. The scholarship is given under the guidelines of
the Scholarship Fund or the Gift for Knowledge Fund again as specified by the
donor. The scholarship bears the name of whomever the donor wishes, year after
year, without the need for further contribution. This gift keeps on giving.

A "Gift for Knowledge Award" is one that is made available by the contributions of many people. A contribution to this award may be given in memory of, to
speed the recovery of, or to honor a special occasion. No amount is too small.
Contributions are used to build the general endowment account, from which only
the interest is used. This award is given to deserving students, in varying amounts,
as donations accumulate.

Charity Fund Contributors
July 1988 Through June 1989
The Charity Program
During the past 14 years, over $93,000 has been contributed to numerous
charities. This has greatly enhanced the success of the Charity Program. Funds
have been donated to hospitals, orphanages, burn centers, epileptic centers and
other health and welfare projects. In addition, a policy was instituted whereby a
contribution is made to a local charity in the city where the Southern Federation
hosts its annual convention. This policy was established in 1987 when the
convention was held in San Antonio, Texas.
Under the guidance of the Charity Director, the Charity Committee reviews
charitable causes to determine the extent of financial assistance to be given. The
decision is at the discretion of the Director and Committee. They are generally
made aware of worthy causes through committee members or members of the
Southern Federation.
Donations to the Charity Fund may be given to celebrate the occasion of a
birthday or anniversary as well as in memory of relatives or friends. Contributions
may also be made directly to specific projects established by the Charity Committee.
Over the years, contributions have been made by the Southern Federation's
affiliated clubs, individual members and the Federation itself. Donations have also
been given by non-Federation members interested in the projects undertaken by
the Committee.

The Cultural Program
The Cultural Program consists of various projects established by the Committee
which, to date, have been primarily for historical documentation. Over $70,000
have been donated to these projects.
One project was the production of a film which highlighted the accomplishments of Syrian Lebanese Americans who had immigrated to the Southern
portion of the United States. The film reflected that their contributions had an
important impact on the development of the South.
The Barker History Center located at the University of Texas at Austin, has been
designated to preserve the archival materials belonging to the Syrian Lebanese
Americans. This project should facilitate the development of an appropriate
exhibit of historical items for use by the Foundation and Federation.
