FIRST SESSION

The convention was called to order by the Convention Chairman, Fayes Thomas, Jr., of the
Syrian Lebanon American Institute of Miami. The invocation was delivered by Msgr, John
Trad, San Antonio 3 Texas, Chapl a i n . Miss Gloria Bassila sang the "Star Spangled Banner" .
Mr. Thomas welcomed the delegates on behalf of the Miami club. The Response to the Welcome
on behalf of the Southern Federation was given by K. E. Antone, Houston, Texas.
Dr. Thomas Zaydon, President of the Syrian Lebanon American Institute, presented the gavel
to Fouad Helou, St. Petersburg 1 Fla., President of the Southern Federation, who in turn
officially opened the first meeting of this, the 31st annual convention.

and accrediting of the delegates by Secretary-Treasurer,
was made by Ka.mil D. Eddie, Jr., Oklahoma City, Okla .,
of the New Orleans convention be dispensed with. Motion
carried,

President Helou appointed Nick Solomon, Orlando, Fla. to serve as Parliamentarian, and
Eddie Romanus, Birmingham, Ala. to serve as sergeant at arms.
Various communications and telegrams were read by Mrs. Zwan. K. E. Antone moved that a
telegram be sent to Miss Lorise Lewis, State Vice-President for North Carolina and her
fiance, Woodrow Mansur, Houston, Texas. Seconded by Amel George; carried.

Convention--Nick Solomon, oral report. Solomon reported that at 4 i 00 P.M. 500 people
had been registered.

�Charity--Mrs. K. E. Antone, Houston, written report. Mrs . Arthur Nasser, Shreveoort,
moved that the Federation wire its appreciation to George Baraket for t :ts help
in securing large quantity of medicine at wholesale prices . Seconded by Antone.
Ways and Means--John Hage, Orlando, oral report. Mr. Hage suggested many ways in which
the Federation could make money, such as Federation night, raffle, federated
sponsored convention, and raising registration fee. Zwan recommended that his
ideas be sent in a letter to the next President and let lwn take the necessary
action .

and regulations set up by Mrs. Manziel in selecting the winner of this awardo

Arabic Language, Anthony Ferris$ Austin, Texas, written report read by James Hayek.
Youth Advisory Board, Al Zwan, oral report. Zwan praised the work of the Syrian Lebanon
American Club of New Orleans, also Miss Martha Owen, President of the Youth
Affiliate and Mrs. George Seamon who had done such splendid work with the youths
of New Orleanso Mr. Zwan asked Mrs. Seamon to give a report to the General
Assembly regarding the works and plans of the New Orleans' Youth Club.
Mrs . Amel George moved that the meeting adjourn; seconded by Hage and carried .
adjourned at 4:07 P.M .

SECOND SESSION
The meeting was called to order by President Fouad Helou at 1:53 P.Mo in the Medallian
Room of the Americana Hotel, Miami, Florida. The meeting was opened with a prayer by Msgro
John Trad.

moved that Mrs . Geor~e be commended by the Assembly for her well done job . Seconded
by Joe Campbell, Shreveport .
President Hel ou i ntroduced Florida State President, Louis Ferris, Orlando ~nd Past President,
Loui s Yar ed, West Palm Beach . Al so introduced was Joseph Sheban, Vice-President of the National Federation.
Joseph Campbell, Chairman of the Executive Board, gave the Assembly a report on the meetings
held by t he Board . A discussi on was held on the additional $1.00 to be added to the regi sbration fee . A voi ce vote defeated this recommendation of the Board. The Assembly voted to act
on each proposal as t he Board 1 s recommendation was submitted by Campbell.
Proposal I- -The Mi d-Wi nter Conference to be held only in cities where clubs ar e affiliated
wit h t he Federat ion and the registrati on fee and disbursement to the Federat ion to be established each year by t he Board . Thi s proposal, r ecommended by the Board was approved by the
Assembl y.
Proposals II and III , rejected by the Board, was also rejected by the Assembly.
Proposal IV--(The Board to el ect i t s Chai:nnan) was recommended by the Board and accept ed by
the Assemblyo
Proposals V and VI, r ejected by t he Boar d was also rejected by the delegates.
Proposal VJiwas recommended by t he Board. After some discussion on the floor Zwan, author
of t he proposal wit hdrew it. (A convention director to be appointed by the Presi dent and he
in t urn would have charge of the conventions . )
Pr oposal VI II had been withdrawn previously.
Proposal IX recommended by the Board was approved by the delegates.

New Business--Charles Ferrell, Pr€sident of the Syrian Lebanon American Cl ub of Orl ando ,
present ed a r esol ut ion regar di ng the Federation's stand in Ameri can and its belief i n a
Di vine Creator. Zwan seconded the adoption of this resolntion. George Coury, Miami 1 asked
t hat a copy be sent to the White House. It was agreed that the resolution woul d be presented
to the National Federation by uur r epresent ative, Mrs, George, who in turn would a sk t hat
t he Na t i onal submit it t o the President,
K. E. Antone was a sked t o draft a resol ution for the Federation to praise the Syri an Lebanon
Amer ican I nstitute of Mi ami f or i t s f i ne convention,
Dr . Zaydon asked t hat future conven;
tion progr am i nclude work shops for specific programs for all clubs .
Miss Martha Owen , Presider t of the Youth Affil iate, gave her report , She asked for adults
to encourage the young p~ople t o work. She re commended the age limit be changed to 14-21,
On recommen:l.ation of George Coury, t he age limit was set at 13-18 . Af ter some discus sion a
meeting of the youths was set after t he General Assembly adjourned.
Ant one presented a resolution to t he Miami club . Solomon moved for its adopti on . Seconded
by Amel George . Solomon asked that a vote of appreciation be gi ven to Antone f or a f i ne
j ob done in such short t ime .

�Election of Offi cers- Nesib Nader, a candidate for Vice-Presi dent expressed hi s apprec iation
to all those who had encouraged him t o run ~ but asked t hat his name be withdrawn from the race .
He stated that next year he plan~ to run for ei ther Presi dent or Vice- President .
The following officers were electeds having been submitted at t he previous meeting by the
Nomi nating Committee. All officers were elected by acclamation .

Secretary-Treasurer-- Rose Zwan (Ackels asked that he be allowed to appoint his Secretary,
and that Mrs . Zwan was his choice. Mrs. Zwan, reluctant to serve,
agreed to abi de by the wishes of the delegates. Hage moved that
she be elected by acclamati on. Seconded by Coury; carried .
Executive Board--James Hayek moved that the slate of Board members submit ted by the
Committee be elected. Seconded by Helen George . Elected were:

He would abide by the ruling of the Board and would let the Board know within 30 days as
t o whether or not Dallas would host the convention . Antone moved that the Board be invested
with power to select the 1963 convention site and announce the selection by Sept . 1, 1962 .
Seconded by Harris Nader; carr ied. Hage moved the a cceptance of the bid f rom New Orleans
for 1964. Seconded by Nader and carried. New Orleans had sutmi tted its bid at the Board
meeting . Helen George moved that the 1963 and 1964 Mid-Winter Conference sites be left to
the discretion of the Board. Seconded by Nader; carried.
Antone moved that t he Secretary send a wire to Mrs. Dorothy Manziel and also all past presi dents advising t hat t hey were missed and the assembly sent best wishes. Seconded by Mrs .
Arthur Nasser, Shreveporto
