JOHN HAGE, PRESIDE

'f

Has held office continuously since 1945

DEAR FRIENDS:
It is in a spirit of deep humility, but with just pride, that we celebrate the Twelfth
Anniversary of the :Founding of our Organization. In humility because all our achievements have been made as a result of our complete reliance in God and in just pride
because we have ultimately become an important factor in the progress of our community.
In a continuance of our prayers to Him, who is the source of all our success, we
ask that our future may contain all the elements which made up what we may safely
conclude to be a very glorious past.
Therefore, we must sincerely realize that these things are more than just what
we desire, they are our obligations. These obligations may suitably culminate out of
the same Brotherly Affection which has been our~ through the years.
Fraternally,
JOHN HAGE,
President, Syrian-American

HISTORICAL DATA OF PAST EVENTS IN THE
PROGRESS OF 'THE SYRIAN-AMERICAN CLUB
It was because of the principle of unity for a better and more progressive Syrian and, later,
Lebanese community, which bore deeply into the minds of the fathers of our Organization
which led to the present assets which we now possess. But first of all, it is necessary to go back
a few years to that first meeting which was held on January 11, 1939 when Mr. George Deeb,
late and beloved Syrian pioneer of Orlando, was elected temporary President, that the f oundation for the present organization was formed. Out of this meeting, which, in reality was
merely a small gathering, plans were put in motion for the first official meeting of V\Thatwas
known as the Syrian-American Club, held on January 18, 1939 and presided over by a newlyelected Chairman, Mr. lY.Iaurice Tamney.
After By-Laws were written and plans for club activity were formed, the Organization
was officially chartered and recorded on the 31st day of March, 1939. The charter members
were:
Thomas Hage
J. T. Hage, Jr.
G. B. Deeb
Sam Fekany
lY.IichaelTamney
Allen Hage
George Fekany
George Zookey
Charles Gazil
J\Jexander Tamney
Allen Fekany
Richard Kaba
Charles Azar
Paul Deeb
Ellis Kaba
Eddie Tamney
Joe Hage
Fred Hage
Mike Hage
First officers to direct the affairs until complete organization were:
G. B. Deeb, President; Thomas Hage, Vice-President; Sam Fekany, Treasurer; John Hage,
Recording Secretary; Directors: George Fekany, Allen Hage and George Zookey.
In 1939-1940 Mr. George Deeb served as President and was in, reality the first official president. Succeeding to the presidency was Mr. Thomas Hage ,vho headed the .club for six years.
Eddie Tamney was elected president after the expiration of this term but due to his removing·
of residence from the city he was, before completion of his term of office, succeeded to that office by John Hage, who has held it continuously to the present time.
Merging of the Women's Auxiliary Club into the organization took place in 1943.
Feeling that some initiative should be taken to further the advance of progress of their
community, the hopes and ambitions of the members were now being directed towards owning a Club House. Action for this purpose was taken on January 5th, 1941 when the grounds for
the present structure were purchased. This dream was realized with completion of the building in April of 1948, at which time a gala celebration was held and attended by many city and
state officials including our own Mayor William Beardall.
Ta:night on; the occasion of our T,velfth Anniversary as an Organization we are celebrating
the complete fulfillment of this dream-the
satisfaction and full payment of our mortgage on
our building.

Insurance is one of those intangible things that you can
never buy except when you don't need it. Insurance policies
are legal contracts that must be written correctly by a qt1alified
insurance councellor who really knows the insurance business.
Just to have an insu.rance policy is not sufficient. The Don lVIott
Insurance Agency, local representative for the American Fire
and, Casualty Co., have a staff of trai11ed employees who are as
close as your telephone. They will be happ~yto check all of your
insurance needs and give you rates for the proper insurance
without any obligations to you. Why not call 8116 tomorrow
