THE SUNDAY GAZETTE
Chaos that was Iran-Contra
found in participants' notes
By PETE YOST
The Associated Press
WASHINGTON - As the Reagan
White House plunged into the chaos
of the Iran-Contra scandal, administration officials took care of the business at hand: They
cut each other's
throats and protected the president.
A portrait of poli tical disaster
emerges from detailed notes of Vice
President Bush,
White House Chief
of Staff Don Bush
Regan, aides to
Secretary of State George Shultz and
others - and the notes are quoted
extensively in the final report of
prosecutor Lawrence Walsh.
Bush thought forced resignations
would help quell the public uproar
over the diversion of Iran arms sales
money to the Contras, according to
his tape-recorded diaries for Nov. 25,
1986.
" Regan should go, Shultz should
go" and Reagan "ought to get this all
behind him in the next couple of
months," Bush confided to the president, according to the vice president's recollections, which he dictated into a tape recorder.
When Bush reported later that
Regan had agreed to resign, "The
President was very, very pleased"
and "he thanked me about three
times," Bush told his diary. "He was
concerned that Don would walk in
and see us talking, so I left after
about 15 minutes."
Bush showed Reagan newspaper
articles suggesting that Regan,
Shultz and national security adviser
John Poindexter "are all out there
with leaks and peddling their own
line." Bush said in his diary that he
and Reagan "talked about the need to
get the Shultz resignation stories in
shape."
Shultz, meanwhile, was telling
aides that Bush "is up to his ears in
Iran" and that Bush was "getting
drawn into a web of lies," according
to one aide's notes. "The whole thing
crushes Bush.... I don't think he can
get elected now on his own."
CIA Director William Casey wanted Reagan to get rid of Shultz. Shultz
wanted the president to fire Poindexter. Eventually, Poindexter was
forced to resign and White House aide
Oliver North was fired. Regan stepped down three months later for failing to control the political damage to
the president.
One of the White House's many
problems in 1986: how to deal with a
possibly illegal White House-approved shipment of Hawk missiles to Iran.
The president told Shultz he had
known about the Hawks delivery but the president stood by silently
two days later when Attorney Gener al Edwin Meese announced in a
meeting of Reagan and his aides that
the president hadn't known.
"They're rearranging the record,"
Shultz later told an aide, who wrote
down the comment.
The scandal was a lawyer's nightmare. Had laws been violated by the
secret arms sales or hadn't they?
A White House aide "exploded"
when White House counsel Peter
Wallison tried to delete a sentence
from a proposed administration
statement that said all laws had been
complied with in the Iran initiative.
Wallison had grave doubts whether
this was true - but "I was told" by
Regan "that this is what the AG
wanted said," and that the president
did as well, Wallison wrote in his
diary.
First lady Nancy Reagan told the
White House chief of staff that she
and the president were "very upset"
by the mounting public furor, according to Regan's notes. According to his
notes, Regan "told her we're going to
have to dump hostages to save Pres's
reputation, if necessary. She agreed.
Risking Presidency."
Prosecutors didn't discover until
1992 that Regan had notes. The exWhite House chief of staff said he left
the originals at the White House when
he resigned under pressure in 1987.
But the Bush White House told Walsh
that they couldn't be found. Regan
supplied Walsh with his copies.
An aide discovered Bush's diaries
in September 1992 locked in a safe in
t he Bush family residence on the
third floor of the White House. Bush's
lawyers didn't disclose the diaries'
existence to Walsh for another three
months, until the presidential election had passed. Bush released selected diary entries a year ago, but Walsh
presented far more revealing entries
in the prosecutor's final report.

The Associated Press
LOS ANGELES - Michael Jackson may reach a multimillion-dollar
settlement as early as next week with
the 14-year-old boy suing him for sexual abuse, Time magazine reported.
Sources in the Jackson camp say
they want to make "this case go
away" and may settle out of court by
Tuesday, according to next week's
edition of Time. The magazine did
not identify its sources.
The story was the latest in a flurry
of published speculation that Jackson
might be moving toward a settlement
of a civil lawsuit accusing him of
molesting the boy during a fivemonth relationship.
No criminal charges have been
The Associated Press
WASHINGTON - One year out of
office, George Bush says President
Clinton's top foreign policy aides more than Clinton himself - are to
blame for U.S. setbacks in Somalia,
Haiti and Bosnia.
While he only mildly criticized
Clinton, Bush lambasted some of his
former Democratic opponents in
Congress, particularly Senate Majority Leader George Mitchell of Maine
and House Majority Leader Richard
Gephardt of Missouri.
Bush said he's not ready to start
writing his memoirs, is working with
his wife, Barbara, on health care issues, and has concluded that he lost
the 1992 election mainly because, "I
just wasn't a good enough communicator."
He complained of media-created
"myths" that gave voters a mistaken
impression that he was out of touch
with mainstream America. And he
said he was surprised to discover
after moving to Houston that "I don't
miss the politics a bit."
Bush said it was too early to grade
Clinton's overall performance on foreign policy. But he said the president's aides were mostly to blame for
an ill-disciplined, "start-and-stop"
but there doesn't seem to be any
structure to their policy," Bush said
in the interview with Washingtonian
magazine.
"I think President Clinton tries to
do too much all by himself, but he
needs first-class support" from his
National Security Council and at the
State and Defense departments, he
said.
Bush didn't mention any Clinton
aides by name, but he suggested outgoing Defense Secretary Les Aspin
was among the weak links.
The interview was conducted by
Victor Gold, a friend and former
Bush speechwriter, on Dec. 13, three
days before Aspin announced his plan
to resign. Gold said he briefly reinterviewed Bush a short time later
on Aspin.
Bush said his thyroid and rapidheartbeat problems were under con-
trol and that his main interest soon
will be teaching and holding seminars - possibly with the participation of world leaders - at the George
Bush School of Public Service at
TexasA&M.
In a detailed review of major foreign policy problems confronting the
Clinton administration, Bush was
most critical of the approach to Haiti
and Bosnia.
Recalling the administration's decision last Oct. 12 to withdraw a
Navy troop landing ship from Haiti
after a small band of armed thugs
threatened to resist it, Bush said the
incident was "devastating, sent a horrible signal" to the world.
"When you send a U.S. ship loaded
with military personnel to go ashore,
you don't say, 'They're going ashore,'
unless you mean it," Bush said. "And
you don't get turned back by a group
of thugs standing on the dock."
Bush credited Clinton with deft
handling of relations with Russia but
said that on Bosnia he exhibited a
"start-and-stop pattern" of first
threatening to use force to end the
fighting and then backing away when
European allies balked.
"They backed away from their
bluster, but not without sending the
unfortunate impression of a weak
and inconsistent U.S. leadership to
the world," he said.
Bush aimed his harshest comments
at Mitchell, the Senate Democratic
leader.
"Mitchell's purpose, his goal, was
simply to bring my presidency down,
and to some degree he deserves
credit for that," Bush said.
filed against Jackson, 35. He denies
molesting the boy.
Earlier this week, the London tabloid Today reported that Jackson was
ready to settle for up to $49 million.
Jackson attorney Johnnie Cochran
Jr. called that story "false" in a story •
published in Saturday's New York
Post.
Time said its sources called such a
high figure "preposterous." But Time
maintained that there is a proposed
settlement, at a figure closer to $5
million.
The Associated Press was unable
to reach Cochran or to get comment
from other Jackson attorneys and
publicists on Saturday. A message
left for the boy's attorney, Larry
Feldman, also was not returned.

The Ukranian Dance .Ensemble

ctellcate embroidery of loops and
turns that delight the eye.
For a definition of dance from
modem to mime, hostess (and television anchorwoman) Chris Kapostasy provided a helpful description of
each style. And we learned that the
roots of modem go back to the
barefoot solo dances of Isadora Duncan.
But "Symbiosis," performed by
Kim Engel and Michelle Reagan of
the Ellen Sinopoli Dance Company,
hardly resembled the early modem
•style. Danced in bare feet, the duet is
a study in relationship: one pulls the
head of the other and they move like
a machine; one stoops, the other
mounts; one runs, the other chases.
The rap song with a Caribbean feel
(by Sergio Mendes and Carmen Alice), the way the dancers fling theiI
limbs like a ·pair of carefree souls,
and the warm lighting and colorful
body suits all syngergize, turning the
dance into a joyous and funky celebration of the body.
The fusion of corporeal mime and
dance that Ko-Motion offered was
much closer to the weighted, rootedin-the body, breath-filled modem
dance of Isadora. The movement in
"Endangered Species" is abstract
and minimal, but the message is
crystal-clear.
While Yallah, with its magnificently-costumed ensemble of Middle Eastern dancers and musicians,
offered the most exotic dances with
exotic names: In "Desert Fantasy"
(Raqs Al-Sharqia), Habiba (Donna
Marie Floyd) communicated a complete range of emotions through the
ripple of fingers, the undulation of
her torso, the roll of her hips and the
tinkling of her glistening finger cim-
bal.
The excellent Irish stepdancer
Rosemary Campbell (accompanied
by John Joe Callahan on the accordion, Cathy Clark on bodhran and
Elio Matarazzo on wooden flute)
offered the most tradional dances of
the evening: an Irish reel in softsho
and a hornpipe in clogs.
And William Otto the mo t classical: "Trois Morceaux en Forme de
Poire" (music by Satie) was performed by the Capital Ballet Company. Followed by another piece by
Ko-Motion. Followed by two more
dance from Yallah.
And then, the intermi ion. Sigh.
The econd half of the evening offered more dances from thee companie , making a total of 18 dances, al~
celebrating the diversity of dance in
the Capital Region.

iddle Eastern dance arises from
·
the culture of the Arab world,
where it is traditionally performed at weddings
and parties, as well as in the best nightchibs
and theaters. Unlike western dance forms
like jazz or ballet, which concentrate on leaps
and extensions, Arabian dance technique
depends on fine muscle control of the torso,
arms and hips, and on interpretation of the
intricate music. The dance is an expression
of feeling: joy, love, sorrow, friendliness,
passion, contemplation, and all the complex
emotions of life.
An example of Raqs Baladi (Dance of the
People), a village-style folk dance focusing o~movemenls of the hips, using syncopated
rhythms typical of Egyptian music.
DANSE ORIENI'ALE
Hahiha
A Raqs Sharki (Dance of the East), the
classical woman's solo in which visual and
emotional interpretation of the music is
created.

DANCE OF THE AWALIM
Ensemble
These women were part of the court and their
traditions remain today. They are called
_u pon to perform at wedding celebrations and
parties, bringing and earthy flavor to the
dance.
SELIMA (Mary Bejian) - has studied
Middle Eastern Dance since 1972 with many
authorities throughout the country. For the
past several years, she has participated in
Ibrahim Farrah's intensive teacher's seminars.
Her background includes folk and classical
dance. Selima is Director of the Yallah
Dance Ensemble, and has performed al the
Egg, Troy's Victorian Stroll, arls-ineducation programs and numerous festivals
and International Bazaars.
HABIBA (Donna Marie Floyd) - has
studied with acclaimed teachers of Middle
_ Eastern dance, including private study with
Ibrahim Farrah. Past performances include
the Organization of African Unity to the
United Nations, Cafe Lena, the
Choreographer's Asylum and .Schenectady
Light Opera Company. Habiba is a recipient
of a grant from Rensselaer County Council
on the Arts.
NISREEN (Genevieve Joseph) - began
studying Middle Eastern dance as a way to
enrich her Lebanese-American heritage. As a
member of Yallah, she has performed for
Albany's First Night Celebration and the
Hudaon River Dance Festival. Nisreen
enjoys promoting understanding of her
cultural heritage through dance.

Bdht Dattce Festival
'91
SATURDAY JUNE 15,1991
6:00 P.M. - 11:30 P.M.
Syracuse. New York
ADMISSION $5.00
Like many dancers, Bedia started as a hobbyist (in 1972).
but grew sufficiently enthralled with the study and practice
of the art to forsake a secure position as a public school
t eacher and librarian and pursue dance full time.
Once a frequent nightclub perfonner, Bedia now dances
in cl ubs on ly when her job require~nts are met. Fonnerly
the di recto r of the Maryland Company of Middle Eastern
Da ncers , Bed ia now operates Washington's most successful
bellygram business with the hope of upgrading the dance in
this performance medium.
Anned with Masters degrees in both Dance Education and
Li brar;· Sc ience, she has published a 35 page "Comprehensive
Sub ject Jiidex to Arabesque" containing over 250 subject
entries, culminating two and a half years of research. As
a member of the George ~~shington University dance faculty
fo r two and a half years, she taught credit courses in
Middle Eastern dance. These courses represented the first
such classes to be included in the dance curriculum of a
college program in the Baltimore-Washington area. Because
of her extensive knowledge of ethnic dance, Bed ia was
invited to serve as dance critic for "Washington Dance
View". Her affiliation with WDV now includes managing
advertising for the publication. In addition, her thoughtprovoking articles have appeared in Arabesque, Habibi,
Middle Eastern Dancer and numerous regional dance
publications.
Bedia's primary focus and energies are directed,
however, to running her studio in Vienna Virginia and
conducting her seminars and classes. Now teaching 15
hours a week, she mainta i ns a waiting list for classes.
private lessons and coaching.
In teaching performance techinque and choreography,
Bedia seeks to cultivate the individual student's creativity.
Her persistence in teaching zills, precise movements, and
principles of choreography with musical interpretation have
e~rned her the reputation of being an outstanding instructor.
Bedia believes her seminars in dance education will prove
to be her most influential contribution to the art thus far.
Participants in her seminars have delighted with the vast
stores of information and new understanding of the teach in g/
l earning process which they have ga i ned .
